Bio
Kanny Yeung cultivated an interest in mapping layers of quantitative and qualitative data into emotive visualizations during her time at Parsons The New School for Design in New York, where she graduated with a BFA in Communication Design.
Embracing the Biophilia Hypothesis, her work involves field-based material and artistic research, biomaterial experiments, ephemeral installations of ecological sculptures, and painting. During a remote residency in Skagaströnd, Iceland (NES Artist Residency, 2023), Kanny engaged with the abundant algae washed ashore, evolving the biomaterial with traditional knitting technology into a biodegradable sculpture that was returned to its source—The Ocean.
Through painting, Kanny processes her experiences in the natural world and from introspection. Like learning different instruments to make different sounds, she dove into experimental techniques, on a journey to translate the spectrum of sensations. Immersing in the alchemy of cathartic repetition, her duo show Wild things (2022) embraces the raw emotions conjured during heartbreak that echo the spiraling ecological rupture. Recurring walks to the waterfall transmute into fields of delicate ink-brush strokes illuminating dark undercurrents. Emerging in her solo show Woo (2022) is a re-connection to the celestial sphere—glowing orbs, spinning spirits and bewitching blooms culminate in a supernatural landscape highlighted with iridescent shimmer.
Hopping off the concrete path, Kanny is embarking on residencies around the world, setting her nomadic studio in-touch with diverse cultures and natural environments as she collects and processes pigments from the wild to ground painting back down to Earth. She continues to traverse the boundaries between chance and control, turbulence and harmony, the ethereal and uncanny.
